World Fantasy was one of those conventions that re-energized me and filled me with plans and ideas, even though it came at the end of a long week. Amazingly I didn't get sick afterwards, like many folks have, and taking last weekend off to just bum around the house and get laundry and the like done was nice.
There are several things going on this weekend, including SFinSF and Writer's With Drinks that I might attend, depending on finances (that's the next item on my 'set my house in order' list), and the Last Unicorn Rave-which I seriously considered but probably won't make after all
I've also started a Google Calendar for the SF/SF events listings and adding the updates via twitter @sfsfcalendar
Fydysyfy is also back on track-this week with Stompy Boots Against Cancer.
Then on Saturday the 20th, the Light Room in Berkeley is having the opening for local artist and all around good guy Michael Dashow. That runs from 2pm to 6pm, which should give me time to get to Borderlands at 7pm to see the Brazen Hussies and still have time to hit the town after.
On both Saturday and Sunday the NorCal Pirate Festival in happing up in Vallejo, it looks fun but is way the heck out there. Is anyone driving up to that Sunday?

I still don't have anything near a completed outfit, of course, although I have like ninetyzillion partial concepts.
On Sunday I went to a going away party for my friend Ian, who is going back to Peru after visiting for a few months. It was a nice party at a place across the street from where I used to live on Fell Street, he has an eclectic group of friends so it;s always interesting hanging out with him. It was also much nicer to be able to actually say hasta luego this time.
In other news, Chris Garcia's Drink Tank just ended it's quite entertaining Fandom on Infitine Earth's series and I provided the cover for #185. I'm not done reading them all, but I looked at all the purty pictures!
Also, over at Huffpo I found this fascinating piece on clean tagging

After breakfast we had planned to see Stardust before heading down the San Carlos for
Sunday I woke up late and realized I'd never taken the clothes out of the washer. The rest of the day kinda followed that pattern and I was fairly discombobulated for most of the day, but I did manage to get a lot of stuff done including finally finishing the two pieces of art I wanted to do for the cocktail issue of the Drink Tank. One came out almost exactly the way I had visualized it and the other almost entirely unlike I had planned, but I'm pretty happy with both so that's ok.
Now it's Monday and something on the work website kinda went kablooey, so there's triple the number of support emails :P

Has anyone taken any of the classes at Beadissimo? I'm vaguely thinking about taking the basic wire techniques class and was wondering if it's worth it. $45 doesn't seem bad-but I don't know how hard this stuff is to learn.

Considering that I did nothing practical on Saturday, this was a surprisingly productive weekend.
Friday on the way home I stopped at the Goodwill on Van Ness and scored some good costuming bits and bobs getting out with a bagful of stuff for $20 :)
Saturday was the Browcoat meetup so JP and I got some protein and grits at the Welcome Home and then headed over to Cafe Murano where the joint was already hopping. At 1:30ish it was still going strong and I was tempted to stay, having plunked down $40 for the Can't Stop the Serenity screening I decided to get out while I was still ahead (or at least not too far behind) and head over to the Book Swap. We stopped at Borderlands first so I could get rid of even more books and I was dismayed to realize that the Tiptree event was about to start, so I missed that... but it was nice say howdy to Jude and to Jacob from Tachyon, if only briefly. Ripley was hiding, though.
The Book Swap was wrapping up when I arrived but there was still cheap booze (which would have been free if I had remembered to bring a cup!) a good DJ and lots of books. I walked out with half a dozen paperbacks without hardly trying.
Flush with success we headed back to the Castro to Orphan Andy's, where I had some very good blueberry pie and
clockworkbuddha was enticed into joining up with us, and he then convinced
sinmix to come along as well for what became an evening of bar hopping. The advantage to bar hopping with a trained medical professional? They make sure you don't end up with a hangover :)
Sunday was all about con prep; the goggles are nearly done, I just need to get some superglue from the hardware store today. I received the box of watch parts that I had ordered and started fiddling with those as well. I also worked on some half-done art for BayCon and a new sketch.
Alas, it is now Monday.

The new ish of SF/SF is up, with a column by moi.
As is the Vonnegut memorial Drink Tank, with art by YT as well.
And finally, if you hand't seen it yet, the flyer for

Nemo Gould is going to be an artist in residence at the San Francisco City Dump! Which sounds like a joke but is actually awesome :)
My first piece ever for SF/SF was about Gould :)
In any case, Art Show reg check has been cashed, so presumably I'm in. Membership has been purchased. Now it's time to hunker down and get some of the potential new art finished and start really looking for costumer stuff if I'm gonna do that.

Seeing everyone was great, I only attended one panel but that was the William Tenn talk on the Welles War of the Worlds broadcast, so quality won out over quantity at least. I managed to sell a piece in the art show for a change, which was nice as was the "kids choice" sticker beside another piece.
As always a more detailed and entertaining account will be in the next SF/SF and a massively innacurate and borderline libelous one in the Drink Tank.

However this gave me an excuse to go back to Varnish, which I visited faithfully during it's Firefly showings and then abandoned like the fickle thing I am. They were having an opening reception for their Re: Assembled show and it was very neat indeed. Their sculptures are always right up my alley, starting with the Szukalski bronzes that were on display during my first visits. But the Nemo Gould kinetic sculptures in particular are really just a raygun short of nirvana.
We were particularily enchanted by "Ocean Scene" which struck just the right Melies/Coen Bros vibe when we gazed at it as "Moon Over Montana" played. Surreal.
Long story short: I don't go to Varnish enough. Here's crossing my fingers that the rumored showings of "Arrested Development" actually do take place.
