November has been kind of a crappy month for most of my friends, but I myself am doing fine and looking forward to Loscon. Hotel and travel is arranged and for a wonder I might have new art to hang.

World Fantasy was one of those conventions that re-energized me and filled me with plans and ideas, even though it came at the end of a long week. Amazingly I didn't get sick afterwards, like many folks have, and taking last weekend off to just bum around the house and get laundry and the like done was nice.

There are several things going on this weekend, including SFinSF and Writer's With Drinks that I might attend, depending on finances (that's the next item on my 'set my house in order' list), and the Last Unicorn Rave-which I seriously considered but probably won't make after all

I've also started a Google Calendar for the SF/SF events listings and adding the updates via twitter @sfsfcalendar

Fydysyfy is also back on track-this week with Stompy Boots Against Cancer.

It's looking like one of those weekends.

This Friday the 19th in addition to the usual Fydy meetup, it's time again for Hubba Hubba. The theme this month is Sideshow and I haven't been recently, so I'm sorely tempted-but it doesn't lend itself to the sort of moderation I should probably still be attempting given that I'm on amoxicillin for the next week or so.

Then on Saturday the 20th, the Light Room in Berkeley is having the opening for local artist and all around good guy Michael Dashow. That runs from 2pm to 6pm, which should give me time to get to Borderlands at 7pm to see the Brazen Hussies and still have time to hit the town after.

On both Saturday and Sunday the NorCal Pirate Festival in happing up in Vallejo, it looks fun but is way the heck out there. Is anyone driving up to that Sunday?

This past weekend, and this week, have been all about getting ready for Steam Powered. Over the weekend [info]sinmix , [info]clockworkbuddha  and self hit Scrap, which was a little overwhelming but tons of fun. Cliff's Variety, Costume Party, Goodwill, etc. have all contributed to the piles of costume bits that I now have all over the damned place. Sometime in the next month or two I'm definitely ordering new storage furniture of some type.

I still don't have anything near a completed outfit, of course, although I have like ninetyzillion partial concepts.

On Sunday I went to a going away party for my friend Ian, who is going back to Peru after visiting for a few months. It was a nice party at a place across the street from where I used to live on Fell Street, he has an eclectic group of friends so it;s always interesting hanging out with him. It was also much nicer to be able to actually say hasta luego this time.

In other news, Chris Garcia's Drink Tank just ended it's quite entertaining Fandom on Infitine Earth's series and I provided the cover for #185. I'm not done reading them all, but I looked at all the purty pictures!

Also, over at Huffpo I found this fascinating piece on clean tagging

Finally getting around to fiddling with my website. The Laughing Squid file manager thingee is actually pretty dang easy to use. Now I just have to clean up the site and get new art up.

Weekend

Friday I was all jazzed for the weekend and got home in the evening with a huge list of things that I wanted to get done. I figured I'd start right away so my Saturday would be more relaxed. So of course I got home, put clothes in the washer, fixed dinner and took a "nap" that put me out until 8AM the next morning... which did mean I was able to get some stuff done before brunch on Saturday at least :)

I met up with [info]clockworkbuddha and [info]sinmix at Kate's Kitchen in Lower Haight, a place I sorta avoided for years since there was always a line. Back in my Haight St. days we would leave one person in line at the late great  Spaghetti Western while the rest of us popped over to the late not-quite-as-great-but-still-fondly-remembered Horseshoe Cafe. This wasn't feasible at Kate's so eventually it faded from my list of places to brunch at. Now that I've finally made it in to Kate's a few times I understand why there's always a line. Good food, fresh and interesting ingredients and huuuuuge portions. Frighteningly huge in some cases. But tasty.

After breakfast we had planned to see Stardust before heading down the San Carlos for [info]trinsf's party. However the showtimes were all inconveniently times so we wandered to the Mission to window shop. The best part of the excursion was when [info]sinmix noticed the window display of Five and Diamond had a mannequin wearing an aviator cap and goggles. We went in and found that among other cool items there was a whole line of clothes from a local designer that were all tres Steampunk, the label name is Steam Trunk and it's all gorgeous. After oohing and aahing and mentally spending our next paychecks (and the ones after that) we oohed and aahed a bit more at Paxton Gate and 826 Valencia (which I'd never actually been in) before hitting Borderlands. I only bought one book but made up for it by badgering [info]clockworkbuddha into a purchase. M. Christian was doing a reading when we arrived, and I managed to hear enough to add his book The Very Bloody Mary's to my to-be-reviewed for the column list since it's set in the city and even mentioned the avenues. Alan revealed that the slow process of getting the cafe built is still underway and sounded quite optimistic. Ripley ignored us. Eventually we made it down to San Carlos and meet up with [info]punkrockgrrrl and had a good time drinking mojitos and sangria and creating our own skewers to grill... creativity+fire is always a good idea.

Sunday I woke up late and realized I'd never taken the clothes out of the washer. The rest of the day kinda followed that pattern and I was fairly discombobulated for most of the day, but I did manage to get a lot of stuff done including finally finishing the two pieces of art I wanted to do for the cocktail issue of the Drink Tank. One came out almost exactly the way I had visualized it and the other almost entirely unlike I had planned, but I'm pretty happy with both so that's ok.

Now it's Monday and something on the work website kinda went kablooey, so there's triple the number of support emails :P

Beadissimo?

Has anyone taken any of the classes at Beadissimo? I'm vaguely thinking about taking the basic wire techniques class and was wondering if it's worth it. $45 doesn't seem bad-but I don't know how hard this stuff is to learn.

Weekend

Considering that I did nothing practical on Saturday, this was a surprisingly productive weekend.

Friday on the way home I stopped at the Goodwill on Van Ness and scored some good costuming bits and bobs getting out with a bagful of stuff for $20 :)

Saturday was the Browcoat meetup so JP and I got some protein and grits at the Welcome Home and then headed over to Cafe Murano where the joint was already hopping. At 1:30ish it was still going strong and I was tempted to stay, having plunked down $40 for the Can't Stop the Serenity screening I decided to get out while I was still ahead (or at least not too far behind) and head over to the Book Swap. We stopped at Borderlands first so I could get rid of even more books and I was dismayed to realize that the Tiptree event was about to start, so I missed that... but it was nice say howdy to Jude and to Jacob from Tachyon, if only briefly. Ripley was hiding, though.

The Book Swap was wrapping up when I arrived but there was still cheap booze (which would have been free if I had remembered to bring a cup!) a good DJ and lots of books. I walked out with half a dozen paperbacks without hardly trying.

Flush with success we headed back to the Castro to Orphan Andy's, where I had some very good blueberry pie and [info]clockworkbuddha was enticed into joining up with us, and he then convinced [info]sinmix to come along as well for what became an evening of bar hopping. The advantage to bar hopping with a trained medical professional? They make sure you don't end up with a hangover :)

Sunday was all about con prep; the goggles are nearly done, I just need to get some superglue from the hardware store today. I received the box of watch parts that I had ordered and started fiddling with those as well. I also worked on some half-done art for BayCon and a new sketch

Alas, it is now Monday.

The new ish of SF/SF is up, with a column by moi.

As is the Vonnegut memorial Drink Tank, with art by YT as well.

And finally, if you hand't seen it yet, the flyer for

[info]warriorfoo's clothes swap at BayCon.

Nemo Gould is going to be an artist in residence at the San Francisco City Dump! Which sounds like a joke but is actually awesome :)

My first piece ever for SF/SF was about Gould :)

BayCon ho!

Not like *that*... sheesh.

In any case, Art Show reg check has been cashed, so presumably I'm in. Membership has been purchased. Now it's time to hunker down and get some of the potential new art finished and start really looking for costumer stuff if I'm gonna do that.

Loscon is over ...

... but it was fun while it lasted. Attendance was low (I think) but there were a bunch of good parties and the dance turned out nicely after a slow start on Friday.

Seeing everyone was great, I only attended one panel but that was the William Tenn talk on the Welles War of the Worlds broadcast, so quality won out over quantity at least. I managed to sell a piece in the art show for a change, which was nice as was the "kids choice" sticker beside another piece.

As always a more detailed and entertaining account will be in the next SF/SF and a massively innacurate and borderline libelous one in the Drink Tank.

The new issue of SF/SF with my first actual column (the actual first was just an intro really) and also with an illustration by moi. No event write-up, though... Worldcon has swallowed my month whole.

Last night my sister and I dropped by the Minna Gallery after a few previous abortive attempts. After hearing about it for so long it was a little underwhelming. Mind you we were there a little early, I think, and also the space was divided into two events so maybe we didn't get the full effect :/

However this gave me an excuse to go back to Varnish, which I visited faithfully during it's Firefly showings and then abandoned like the fickle thing I am. They were having an opening reception for their Re: Assembled show and it was very neat indeed. Their sculptures are always right up my alley, starting with the Szukalski bronzes that were on display during my first visits. But the Nemo Gould kinetic sculptures in particular are really just a raygun short of nirvana.

We were particularily enchanted by "Ocean Scene" which struck just the right Melies/Coen Bros vibe when we gazed at it as "Moon Over Montana" played. Surreal.

Long story short: I don't go to Varnish enough. Here's crossing my fingers that the rumored showings of "Arrested Development" actually do take place.
